TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI
Due to massive public demand, Tokyo Groove Jyoshi (TGJ), the all-female groove/funk band, is back for their 2nd “Grooving Down Under” tour after the highly successful “Tokyo Down Under” tour of April 2024. Four of their seven shows in Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney were SOLD OUT!
Formed in 2018 in Tokyo by producer Koichi Kaneko (Neko), TGJ consists of Japanese session musicians. The band’s current lineup includes Emi Kanazashi (keyboards/vocals), MiMi Kawakami (drums/vocals), and Rina Hoshino (bass/vocals).
Neko, who lived in New York City for eight years in the 1980s and 2010s, attended around 500 live concerts and shows. In the late 1980s, he discovered creative music beyond genres and fell in love with groove music. As Duke Ellington said, “There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind.” Neko has strived to produce TGJ as a powerful groove band with music that transcends generations, genders, and genres.
In February 2020, the band performed at notable New York jazz clubs such as the Bitter End, Shrine, Sugar, Groove, and Café Wha? Invited back by famed producer Ray Angry, TGJ played almost every night. They have toured extensively across Japan, performing at festivals and jazz clubs, and more recently, TGJ traveled overseas to Taiwan for the Sound Wave Festival in April 2023, Singapore for the Sentosa Music Festival’s “Jazz by the Cove” in December 2023, Australia (where four of their seven shows in Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney were sold out in April 2024), and Las Vegas (for three shows at the Maxan Jazz Club in June 2024).
TGJ has 68 videos released on YouTube, featuring a mix of originals and covers. Their original track “Funk No. 1” has over 18 million views, while their rendition of Tower of Power’s “What is Hip” has over 3 million views. Their single “Hot Summer” is ranked No. 1 in R&B/Soul on iTunes (Turkey), and their EP “Tokyo Groove” is ranked No. 8 in R&B/Soul on iTunes (Japan). The band’s third EP, released in January 2024 with a “Dance Music” concept, reached No. 2 in Japan and Germany in the iTunes R&B/Soul category.
These ladies will delight you with their groove funk music and endearing charm!
