ANITA WARDELL

“Anita Wardell …is currently one of the most exciting and original exponents of the art of vocal improvisation.” Martin Lilleker, Sheffield Telegraph

During her teens, Anita started to get to grips with the complexities of modern jazz when she discovered the works of Clifford Brown, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. At the same time, she learned her vocal craft from listening to greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Mark Murphy, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Jon Hendricks and Eddie Jefferson.

After attending secondary school, Anita completed her degree in Music at Adelaide University. In 1990, she relocated back to the UK, where she studied at the acclaimed Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Her recording career began in 1995 with her album ‘Why Do You Cry? ‘, which featured pianist Liam Noble.

Anita’s latest album ‘The Road’ was released in 2013, and she won the Best Vocalist category in the British Jazz Awards that year. She followed that up with another nomination at the British Jazz Awards in 2014.
